Observation Narrative
Vegetation on this slope is a somewhat stunted, Crataegus punctata dominated forest with a lush and diverse herb layer. Although potential successor trees such as Acer saccharum and Aesculus flava are scattered canopy associates in the stand, only sparse recruitment of these species is present in the lower strata. The forest appears to a long-persistent seral stage following disturbance of northern hardwood forests by logging and probably grazing.
